Each year, approximately 90 million tons of recycled asphalt pavement is produced in the United States. Recycled Asphalt Pavement or millings can be an excellent source of aggregate asphalt for new HMA (Hot Mix Asphalt) patching materials. The collected recycled asphalt pavement or millings are added to virgin mix (10 to 50% by weight of the mixture) and then placed like any other typical hot mix asphalt mixture. In many parts of the country, typical savings of 20%-50% are achieved. There are someissues with the utilization of recycled asphalt and millings as a binder in asphalt mixtures alone. One major issue is the binder oxidizes and becomes very hard. Contractors have had tremendous success adding rejuvenating agents like PelletRAP and PelletRAP Rejouvenator to soften the binder and making the mix more workable. In the case of using 100% recycled asphalt in mixtures, this issue becomes very crucial and an absolute necessity. These mixtures are being used around the country as a method of pavement preservation technique (e.g., fixing pot holes), utility patches, or parking lot paving applications with tremendous results.

PelletPATCH Distributors, LLC has partnered with Phoenix Industries, LLC to develop and manufacturer a pelletized a polymer asphalt binder resulting in PelletRAP and PelletRAP Rejuvenator. The matrix includes virgin binder, crumb rubber from recycled, hydrated lime and proprietary additives. The pellets are delivered as bulk materials in a super sack of approximately 1,500 pounds or smaller bags, conveniently customized to a weight that makes PelletRAP easier to use with your recycling unit (i.e. 5 lbs or 10 lbs). The pelletized materials are stored on site and used as needed. The pellets are added to the heated mixture and the heat transfer allows the pellets to melt and act as a rejuvenator. In many parts of the country, contractors have used these pellets in ratios of up to 1% by weight of the recycled asphalt as the rejuvenating agent with great success.

The exact amount of PelletRAP to recycled asphalt millings varies based on the oil content and age of the preexisting material, Also, the end use of the material will dictate the amount of PelletRAP necessary. Mix designs for projects are easily determined with standard asphalt laboratory testing. Many contractors indicate that using PelletRAP and PelletRAP Rejuvenator not only improves the workability of their recycled asphalt material, but also decreased the cost of their mixtures. In summary, the pellets provide a unique method of rejuvenating preexisting asphalt millings using other recycled materials including crumb rubber from waste tires. PelletRAP provides the benefits of other more expensive rejuvenating agents including RAP oil and wax beads. It does so in a much cleaner fashion, without the bad smells associated with other products on the market.
